SOUTHERN ARMY COMMANDER CELEBRATES REPUBLIC DAY

AT PARAPLEGIC REHABILITATION CENTRE, PUNE

1. In a break from the traditional Republic Day celebrations Southern Army Commander, Lt Gen AK Singh spent the morning with the inmates of Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre, Pune. All the 68 inmates were thrilled to have him in their midst. GOC in C said that he felt truly inspired by their zest for life, notwithstanding their grave personal challenges of paraplegia and quadriplegia which handicaps them for even smallest of daily chores. The indefatigable spirit of the men was on display during the wheel chair basketball match as they enthralled everyone with their skills. The GOC-n-C pinned his Commendation to Flying Officer MP Anil Kumar for his indomitable fighting spirit, courage and many accomplishments despite all adversities.

2. Flying Officer MP Anil Kumar alumni of National Defence Academy was adjudged the best air force cadet of the 65th Course. After passing out of NDA he secured a gold medal for aerobatics going onto become an ace fighter pilot. Unfortunately his brilliant flying career was tragically cut short in a freak road accident when he severely injured his spine losing complete mobility below the neck. In his journey of self discovery post accident, the former fighter pilot taught himself to write, initially by holding a pen with his teeth and subsequently on computer, using a specially modified keyboard holding a stylus in his mouth. Anil is a prolific writer in all leading dailies and on net. His life story ‘Airborne to Chairborne’ is part of standard X English Reader for high school syllabus in the Maharashtra and Kerala. A book on him with compilation of all his articles edited by his sister Dr Preeja was released on 21 Jan 2012 by Shri Ooman Chandy during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Sanik School Kazhakootam, his alma mater. Heading this wonderful institution is Dr Satya Paul Jyoti a specialist in spinal cord injuries. He has dedicated himself to improving quality of medical care and support to the inmates. Gen AK Singh in recognition of his selfless work honoured him with GOC-n-C Commendation

On the occasion of Republic Day 2012, Lieutenant General AK Singh, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, Aide-de-Camp, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command has been awarded Param Vishist Seva Medal (PVSM) in recognition of his devotion to duty and outstanding distinguished service. The General Officer is commanding the Southern Army, the Largest Command of the Indian Army, with distinction. He was singularly responsible for conceiving and executing some of the largest ever maneuvers in the recent times including two landmark exercises; Yodha Shakti in 2010 and the recently held Exercise Sudarshan Shakti which displayed the might of the Indian Army and the Air Force in the Thar Desert.



Lt Gen AK Singh is an officer with maximum operational experience both as a field commander and in the military operations directorate, the nerve centre of the Indian Army entrusted with planning complex military operations, where he had an unprecedented three tenures. Besides, he also headed the foreign division of the Indian Army and the challenging appointment of Director General Perspective Planning where he was responsible for all future strategies, development of long term perspectives and transformation of the Indian Army in the 21st century including long term budgeting.
