Cong rebel against canal inauguration by Sonia
Dissident MLA Col Sonaram Chaudhary has now upped the ante ahead of Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s scheduled visit to Barmer on August 30 to inaugurate Barmer lift Canal project to humble Gehlot.
Congress MLA, who represents Batayoo in Barmer and bete noire of Gehlot, Col Sonaram, raised objections to the the state government’s decision to get the project inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi when project according to him is still incomplete putting the Congress president in a dilemma.
He also alleged that about 172 villages in Barmer of which 151 villages falls under his constituency which has to benefit from the project have been deliberately left out of the project to settle political score with him.
Following the complaint by Sonaram the Congress leadership is said to have deputed AICC general secretary in charge of Rajasthan Mukul Wasnik to conduct a reality check. Wasnik, Gehlot and PCC president Dr Chandraban on Saturday visited Barmer while local MLA Sonaram was conspicuous by his absence.
When contacted Sonaram said: “I am on way to Jodhpur way back from Delhi.” When asked about his absence in Barmer when the chief minister visits the district ahead of the Congress president’s visit he said that "let him do his work and I am doing my job.”
He said: “I apprised the Congress leaders in Delhi that this project was launched in 1994. It’s an old project and even now it’s only 60 per cent complete,” said Col Sonaram.
The project basically aims at supplying drinking water to rural areas in border districts. But around 172 villages including 151 of my constituency which were initially supposed to get water supply have been left out of the project, he alleged. There is strong resentment among the people in Barmer.
The project was drawn to meet drinking water needs of Barmer’s 529 villages and Jaisalmer’s 162 villages, besides the requirements of the Barmer town and the region’s BSF cantonment and Uttarlai air force station.
The sudden visit of Wasnik has left the Congress leaders in the state divided. While a faction of the Congress leaders loyal to the chief minister says it as a routine visit arguing that Wasnik being the state in-charge the party is here to take stock of the situation ahead of the party president’s visit.
